Get your Self Assessment into order

If you work for yourself, receive rental income or have other income to report, preparing your tax return can involve more than one set of records. MB Accounting can help you bring the information together and understand what needs to happen next.

Support for your circumstances

We help with self-employed accounts, partnership-related requirements and personal tax returns. We can also discuss rental income, dividends and other income relevant to your return.

Tell us about all your income sources at the start so we can identify the scope of the work and any additional information needed.

Prepare the right information

Depending on your circumstances, useful records may include business income and expenses, bank statements, employment documents, rental income and costs, and details of dividends. We will explain which records are relevant to you.

Keep your first enquiry brief. Tax references and detailed financial documents can be shared later through an agreed channel.

Plan ahead for the amount due

Completing a return is also an opportunity to understand the calculation and prepare for payment. Ask us about the expenses and reliefs relevant to your circumstances and any future payments you may need to plan for.

Check whether Making Tax Digital affects you

Some sole traders and landlords now need to keep digital records and send quarterly updates using compatible software. Eligibility depends on the applicable income rules and exemptions.

Making Tax Digital support

Can you help with my first return?

Yes. Tell us when you started receiving the income and whether you have already registered for Self Assessment.

What if my records are incomplete?

Let us know what is missing and any deadline you are working towards. We will discuss what can be reconstructed and whether extra work is needed.

Will I receive a refund?

A refund depends on your income, expenses, reliefs and tax already paid. It cannot be guaranteed before your circumstances have been reviewed.

When is the next usual online filing deadline?

For the 2025/26 tax year, the usual online filing and balancing-payment deadline is 31 January 2027. Different rules can apply in some circumstances, and payments on account may also be due. Check your own position rather than relying on one date for every obligation.

Sole trader accounting services and return preparation

Self Assessment tax return services cover the agreed return-preparation work. For a self-employed person, the calculator combines the £80 return item with £40 self-employment preparation, giving a one-off £120 fee including VAT. Optional other-income preparation is £40.

If you need receipts sorted, records reconstructed or ongoing MTD support, discuss those tasks separately. Bring details of all relevant income and explain any missing information so that we can agree a realistic scope before work begins.

More questions about Self Assessment and personal tax

Is the Self Assessment fee a one-off payment?

Yes. Our Self Assessment and self-employment preparation items are one-off VAT-inclusive payments. MTD support is a separate quarterly selection.

What if I have rental income as well as self-employment?

Tell us about both sources and how your property records are kept. Other-income work may be needed, and combined qualifying income can affect your MTD position. We will confirm the scope for your circumstances.
